Infusing an Active Lifestyle
Sports are the backbone of life at Royal Oak Intermediate. Most morning teas and lunchtimes are busy with trials and training for different sports throughout the year. There are a variety of sporting opportunities at ROI including one day tournaments and weekly after school tournaments. All sports are led by dedicated staff members and parent helpers.

Sports Days
Swimming Sports
At the beginning of Term 1 every year, Royal Oak holds our annual Swimming Sports day at Jellicoe Pools. We run both competitive and non competitive events to include all students, as well as staff races and our much-anticipated Student vs Teacher race. Students are encouraged to attend wearing their house colours and be ready to fiercely support their house.

Cross Country
In Term 3 each year, we head over to Monte Cecilia to hold our annual cross country race. The course is tough; hilly, but manageable for all and we encourage everyone to participate in either the 1 lap fun run or the 2 lap competitive race. Participants earn points for their house, contributing to an overall winner for the day.
Athletics: School
In Term 4, ROI travels by bus to Mt Smart Stadium for our annual athletics day. At what is the most highly anticipated sporting event on the school calendar, students are treated to a range of activities encompassing both track and field events. The teacher race at the end of the day gives one teacher the chance to reign supreme over the others as the fastest staff member before the staff race the fastest students in a relay race. The day is always filled with plenty of excitement, surprising results and house spirit.

Lunchtime Sport
We offer an interclass sporting competition throughout each term, having each class play off against one another to reach semi finals and finals before the champion class plays against the teachers in the last week of term. Many of the teachers are as invested as the students are, making the whole competition a very engaging experience. The sports we play are:
- Longball
- Dodgeball
- Baseline Netball
- Non-stop Cricket

Thursday Sport
Every Thursday afternoon in Terms 1 and 4, ROI staff and students participate in Rec Sport. Each house forms 8 teams of mixed ability to rotate around different stations where they learn new skills, strategies and compete in games. Points are awarded to each team for their adherence to our school RERE values and are then added up to the weekly house point totals.
These rotations provide great learning and leadership opportunities for students.

After School Sport
Royal Oak offers opportunities in a variety of codes. We are currently involved in netball, girls’ basketball and water polo competitions as well as cricket and rugby 7s exchanges.
Trials and training will be held in advance of competition commencing, with weekly training continuing throughout the competition.
These teams train before or after school each week and require a participation fee. Teams are staff led and may require parental assistance with transport.

Royal Oak Intermediate has a proud history competing at the AIMS Games in Tauranga. Our girls’ rugby 7s team has consistently achieved highly, winning 7 years in a row up until 2019. Additionally, our gymnastic team have proudly represented ROI on the podium each year they have competed.
The sporting codes being entered in 2021 are Netball, Girls’ Rugby 7s, Boys’ Rugby 7s, Girls’ Football and Boys’ Football.
These teams are all coached by staff members and will require parental assistance throughout the lead up as well as down at the week long competition. Teams will fundraise to lower the cost of the trip, and we endeavour to charge no more than $250 per student.
Trials for AIMS will be held in the first term of each year.
